Detroit Tenors: Carl Cafagna and Steve Wood
The latest sounds blowing in from Detroit are from the Detroit Tenors, led by saxophonists Carl Cafagna and Steve Wood. The band is a tribute to the great tenor sax pairings of the 40s and 50s such as Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray, Johnny Griffin/Lockjaw Davis, and Al Cohn/Zoot Sims. The Detroit Tenors takes this tradition into the modern era with arrangements from the "tenor-centric" bands of Elvin Jones and compositions by such contemporary players as George Coleman and George Garzone.
Cafagna and Wood are mainstays of the Detroit jazz scene and have performed with a "who's who" of local and international greats, including Marcus Belgrave, Roy Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, Richie Cole, Mose Allison, the Clayton Brothers, and Hot Club of Detroit. With the addition of the explosive rhythm team of Gwinnell, Keller, and Dobbins, you've got a chemistry that guarantees musical fireworks!
