ABOUT THE ARTIST
Crooner Paul King, born in Bay City, Mich., began singing early in life with his father in the church choir and community variety shows. Through his early-life musical studies in piano, saxophone and guitar, and later performances with rock bands while attending Michigan State University, King’s music is always evolving. While living in East Lansing, He continued his musical education in vocal jazz with Sunny Wilkinson, renowned jazz vocal artist and university professor.
King’s musical journey continues today with a passion for fine tuning his style, technique and jazz chops, but always with a nod to the swingin’ crooners of big band era. Today, King regularly sings with his swinging and award-winning big band, the Rhythm Society Orchestra (RSO), loved by dancers and swing music fans throughout the Midwest. You can also find King singing with many of Detroit’s best musicians throughout the Motor City area, including the Dirty Dog Jazz Café, Cliff Bell’s and the London Chop House.
King and RSO are one of the hardest working big band in metro Detroit, performing for various area events and live on local media. King and his bands are often nominated to the Detroit Music Awards, while he and RSO are eight-time winners of the Big III Battle of The Big Bands, held every year at Detroit’s Masonic Temple. King’s recordings include Tom Loncaric’s I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby, RSO’s Linger Awhile, The Royal Garden Trio’s second self-titled recording and King and Scott Gwinnell’s production of Paul King With Strings. In addition, one of King’s songs was featured on the ABC hit show Men In Trees, and King and RSO can be seen and heard performing in the movie Forever In Time.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
Six years ago, we came up with a new live music series – Kittens & Crooners – to celebrate the music and style of our country’s classic jazz singers like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, and Rosemary Clooney. The four shows we held in 2016 at the Tipping Point Theater in Northville went over so well that we continued presenting live jazz at that venue until the pandemic put a halt to indoor concerts. (Don't worry, we'll be doing more shows at the Tipping Point.) In early 2022, we revived Kittens & Crooners in another intimate venue that’s perfect for this type of performance: the lower level of Ciao Amici's restaurant in downtown Brighton.
